Steph Fraser – “Cold Hard Facts”
The new independent single “Cold Hard Facts” by Steph Fraser is a brilliant piece of guitar pop that deserves your attention. Released on 25 June via Sweet Bird, the track features a bright arrangement built around layered acoustic guitars and the distinct chime of a 12 string Rickenbacker. It has a great immediate quality, capturing the genuine energy of a live band performance. That raw environment makes sense when you find out it was recorded live at Blueprint Studios in Manchester, a space heavily linked to the band Elbow. Steph later overdubbed her vocals inside the motorhome where she lives and tours with her longtime collaborator Jonny Wright.
The song manages to sound upbeat on first listen, but it quickly reveals a deep emotional core. Steph explores the quiet realities of emotional abuse, delivering the memorable hook line, “He gave me the Cold Hard Facts of Love”, without dropping into heavy sentimentality. It addresses coercive behavior and misogyny in a way that feels timeless yet perfectly relevant today, earning comparison to writers like The Smiths, Sharon Van Etten, and Father John Misty. The track is already a great moment in her live sets, sparking personal conversations with audience members who recognize their own lives in her writing.
I absolutely love this single. The contrast between the jangly pop music and the serious subject matter shows incredible songwriting skill. If you enjoy this track, you should definitely check out her previous releases, including her collaboration with Jack Savoretti on the single “Only Gonna Cry For You”. She also gave acclaimed performances at the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year, showing how much she can achieve on stage. With a string of UK live dates coming up at places like the Folklore Rooms in Brighton and the Carlton Club in Manchester, plus a debut album on the way, she is a truly exciting artist to watch.
