Sour Bridges – “Big City”
Sour Bridges brings a great slice of roots music with their single “Big City”. Coming out of Austin, Texas, the band captures the exact energy of diving headfirst into a massive local music community.
The song was written by Bill Pucci and recorded right in the middle of downtown Austin at Dog Star Studios. It started out as just a voice and an acoustic guitar, but the band started messing around with it during the session and completely transformed it. You can hear a heavy Bob Dylan influence in the way the fingerpicked guitar anchors the whole thing, creating a solid foundation for the story to build on.
What makes this record work so well is how it builds. It starts out quiet and intimate, then slowly swells with low-register piano and some really interesting, unconventional percussion. The real high point comes during the harmony on the words “in the city”. It adds a huge wave of longing and confidence that completely changes the vibe of the track. It went from being a simple acoustic filler piece to the band’s absolute favorite recording on their entire new EP. It feels completely authentic to the grit and ambition of a bustling city.
