Cat TV – “Fun in the Ghost Town”

I just discovered the debut EP by Cat TV, and it is a blast. The Lowell punk outfit put together six tracks on Fun in the Ghost Town that pack a ton of garage alterna-punk attitude. They recorded the project over at Blue Banshee Recording Studio in Brewster, and you can hear that raw energy right away.

The lineup is pretty unique because nearly everyone plays bass. Caitlin Malcuit handles the lead vocals, and she actually tracked them in the studio shower, which gave her performance a cool, distinct edge. Steve Herdegen holds down the drums, while Quinn Lawrence, Jesse Buday, and Dino round out the massive wall of bass, guitar, and keyboard noise.

You can tell these guys have a wicked sense of humor. They write songs about weird stuff like Satanic Panic, jaguars, and the general human condition. A huge standout is JAG UR, which is already a crowd favorite at their live shows. It turns the everyday frustration of getting stuck behind a slow luxury car on the highway into a loud, cathartic release. Another great track is Baby I’m Down, a punky anthem about leaving the daily grind behind that features relentless drumming and great collective noise.

I really love this record. It makes me want to catch them live on August 1st at The Worthen Attic. You should definitely check out the previous releases from Cat TV to see how they built up to this point. Make sure to follow Cat TV to stay updated about new releases in the rest of this year.
