Molly O’Mahony – “Waiting On The World”

Molly O’Mahony’s debut album Waiting On The World arrived quietly, but it deserves to be heard loudly. Ten tracks that sit with you long after they end.

The album holds together as a single piece of work. It follows a relationship from its very first sparks all the way to something deep and tested, and the backdrop is a world that feels fractured and strange. Molly doesn’t force that tension into something heavy-handed. She lets it bleed in at the edges, which is exactly the right call.

“Cold Water” is a sharp little parable about two people so locked into their own corners that neither one can hear the other. It’s about tribalism and fear, and it lands with real bite. “Golden Thing” is the album’s emotional gut-punch for me. “Blue-Eyed Girl” is the surprise and it’s my favorite. Written after her young niece fell and hurt herself, it’s a genuinely tender piece about wanting someone you love to hold onto their faith in people, even when life keeps proving difficult. Simple idea, beautifully handled.

The closing track “Starlight & Shadow” earns its optimism. This is not a record that fakes a happy ending. By the time hope arrives, it feels real and hard-won.

Personally, I think this is one of the most emotionally honest Irish albums in years. Dig into Molly O’Mahony’s back catalogue if you haven’t already, and make sure you’re following her for what’s coming later this year.
