Yulyseus – “Nothing Under Heaven”
Yulyseus is a Scottish ambient and drone artist named Niall Gahagan who has been quietly building a catalog worth paying attention to. His third album, Nothing Under Heaven, is out now via n5MD, and if you haven’t heard it yet, “Turadh” is a good place to start.
“Turadh” is one of the best tracks in the album, and it’s the kind of track you put on when you want something that actually holds your attention without demanding it. It’s built from layered electronics, bowed strings, and field recordings, and the whole thing moves at its own pace. Yulyseus spent years living across Glasgow, Berlin, Mexico City, and Valencia, and that kind of slow drift between places seems to have genuinely shaped how this music is put together. My favorites are “Sonnenallee”, “Caoimal”, and “Veillands”.
His 2022 album was a darker, more closed-off listen. Nothing Under Heaven opens things up a bit. The sound is more expansive, more patient. You have to give it room to do its thing, and I wouldn’t throw this on as background noise for a dinner party, but if you’ve got headphones and some time to actually sit with it, it rewards that.
Yulyseus has been at this long enough to know what he’s doing, and this album is a solid reminder of why he’s worth following. Go find it on Bandcamp or Apple Music, and follow Yulyseus on social media to stay up to date on whatever he does next.
