Night Wolf x The Fods – “Kickback”

Night Wolf has been doing his thing in the darker corners of UK music for a while now, so “Kickback” feels like a bit of a curveball, in a good way. The track is a remake of a song by The Fods, but Night Wolf has rebuilt it almost completely. He kept the original vocal parts and replaced pretty much everything else, which is a brave call and it pays off. Night Wolf is one of the best projects we’ve covered on Beach House in the past couple of months.

The result has this easy, Sunday afternoon energy to it. Marimba and strings lift the whole thing, giving it a warm, slightly cinematic feel without going over the top. It sits comfortably in that trip hop space while pulling in a bit of indie pop at the same time. Not a combination you hear very often, and it works better here than you might expect.

The vocals stay hopeful and the production gives them room to breathe. Nothing is fighting for attention. You could genuinely picture this in a film scene or a well-placed advert because it has that kind of mood without being bland or predictable. Easy listening that still has a bit of character behind it.

Personally, I think this is one of the more interesting things Night Wolf has put out. It shows a different side without losing the craft. If you have not heard The Fods before, this is a good entry point and worth digging into their earlier work from there. Give them a follow to keep up with whatever they put out for the rest of this year.
