Hi Ho, Six Shooter! – “Close as Kin”
Some bands take twenty years off and come back sounding like a tribute act to themselves. Hi Ho, Six Shooter! are not one of those bands. “Close as Kin” sneaks up on you. It doesn’t announce itself or try to make a big first impression. And to be honest, it’s of the best releases I discovered this week, you will love. The song lives in that dusty space between country and indie rock, where Americana storytelling bumps up against something with a little more grit.
Personal without being precious about it. The song is clearly about the people who stay in your life and what that actually means, but it never gets heavy-handed or sentimental in a way that feels forced. The whole thing breathes. And the band sounds genuinely at ease inside it, not like a group trying to prove something after a long absence, but like people who’ve lived more and have a little more to say because of it.
It’s the kind of song that makes you want to go back and listen to everything they’ve ever put out. So do that. Their earlier records are worth your time and will make “Close as Kin” land even harder once you’ve got the full picture. Follow Hi Ho, Six Shooter! wherever you listen to music because this one suggests they’re not just back for nostalgia’s sake.
