Fons & the Chargers – “In Our Yard Stands An Apple Tree”

Fons & the Chargers return with their original single “In Our Yard Stands An Apple Tree”, released in February. Fons wrote the song himself after he and his wife lost their unborn child nearly two years ago, and that real experience sits at the center of it. When you know the story, it’s hard not to listen more closely.

At the time of the loss, their baby was the size of an apple seed. In response, they planted an apple tree as a way to turn their grief into love and acceptance, and it gives the song’s title real meaning and makes the it feel grounded in something honest. I respect how direct Fons is about sharing this part of his life, especially when he talks about how speaking with others helped them cope and how he hopes the song might reach people who are going through something similar.

He wanted the intimacy of a crooned ballad, and the vocals are supported by strings and acoustic guitar. The song was written and finished in Hengelo during a Christmas family dinner at his mother-in-law’s house. After everyone went to bed, the thought that their child could have been there sparked the writing. That moment of contrast between celebration and absence gives the release even more depth.
