John Goldrust – “Travellers In Timing”
John Goldrust’s Travellers In Timing EP is a solid introduction to his guitar-based songwriting. It’s his first full collection in this style, and there’s a clear sense that he’s put a lot of care into how it all came together. The songs focus on different kinds of relationships: romantic, family, how we interact with society, and how we relate to ourselves.
John writes from his own point of view. He’s not trying to follow a formula or copy what’s popular, and that comes through in the structure and flow of the songs. There are hints of artists like Paul Simon or The Cure in the songwriting, but it never feels like imitation and it sounds personal, like something he needed to get out into the world.
My favorite tracks of the EP are “Like A Phoenix”, “How Like The Goddess”, “Forever And A Day”, and the way it was recorded adds to that, because he skipped the usual shortcuts. No autotune, no rigid timing. He made choices that keep the tracks sounding natural. That makes a big difference. Everything feels more honest and less processed.
If you’re into music that’s thoughtful and made without shortcuts, give this EP a listen. And make sure to follow John Goldrust on social media to catch whatever he’s working on next this year.
