Chloé French – “Chocolat”
Chloé French just released “Chocolat”, and I’m really digging this one, and it’s the third single from her EP “The NY Tapes”, and she’s clearly going for a French Disco sound with a late-night attitude. The track has this sultry, nostalgic edge that makes it more than just another dance song.
The inspiration behind “Chocolat” is actually pretty interesting, Chloé was thinking about a chocolate cramique from Le Merveilleux de Fred, this pastry that reminded her of home. She turned that memory into a song about wanting something you shouldn’t have. She made this track with Alex Poeppel at Kensaltown East Studios in New York City. The production has this confident swagger that matches the whole late-night disco vibe she’s aiming for. The nostalgia element adds another layer to it, giving the song more substance.
Chloé’s only 24, but she’s already done a lot. She just graduated from NYU and lived in Geneva, Paris, and Berlin before moving to New York. You can hear those European influences mixed with NYC’s grittiness in her music, and it gives her a sound that’s different from most artists right now. Her previous singles got airplay on Swiss radio and made it onto Apple Music’s New Music Daily, which is pretty impressive for someone just starting out. She’s also been in the studio writing with Jared Benjamin, the guy who co-wrote “Meant to Be,” and she’s worked with Brynn Cartelli and Riley Whittaker too. She knows how to write a good song.
