Ruud Voesten – “Ambrosia II”
Ruud Voesten’s Ambrosia II is the kind of album that pulls you in if you’re into jazz with a story behind it. The whole thing is based on Dante’s Purgatorio, and while that might sound intense at first, the music makes it feel personal and easy to connect with. Each piece ties into one of the seven sins, but it doesn’t come across like he’s trying to prove a point or follow a strict concept. It just flows.
What really impressed me was how naturally the band plays together. It’s clear there’s structure in place, but they never sound boxed in. There are these long moments where it feels like they’re really locked in, giving each other space and reacting in the moment. Some tracks have a darker, heavier energy, especially early on, but things shift as the album goes on. It ends up in a place that’s way lighter and more reflective.
If you love and enjoy modern jazz that feels thoughtful without being overly polished, this is worth checking out. Follow Ruud Voesten on social media to keep up with what he’s working on next in 2025.
