One Hundred Moons – “Black Avalanche”
Toronto’s One Hundred Moons has been around since 2021, mixing ’90s alt-rock with dream pop and post-rock in a way that sounds genuine, and their new album Black Avalanche is where everything they’ve been working toward comes together. It’s dark, layered, and hard to turn off once you start listening.
The album moves between heavy atmospheric moments and quieter, more emotional stretches, and it all holds together really well. This album comes after their 2024 EP Take Two, where they covered ’90s classics, but Black Avalanche is where they really come into their own. The title track is a perfect example. It’s haunting and cinematic, with guitars that wash over you and rhythms that get stuck in your head. There’s a sense of yearning running underneath it all, but it never gets too heavy-handed.
The lineup (Collin Young, Jen Vella, Justin Hunt, Matt Laplante, and NJ Borreta) knows how to give each other room to breathe while keeping everything connected. This is one you’ll want to listen to all the way through. Follow One Hundred Moons on social media to stay in the loop on what they’re putting out next in 2025.
