Yulan & Blaise – “Falling 花火落”

I’m so impressed with the new song by Yulan & Blaise “Falling 花火落”, the music is so clean and the melodies are so beautiful that it makes me emotional from the first seconds.
This art pop follow-up to the band’s debut “God Complex” is a bilingual wonder that combines both Mandarin and English lyrics with electronic beats and acoustic instruments. This is where you can really hear the duo’s backgrounds meld into something magical, Yulan’s otherworldly voice soaring above Blaise’s incredible saxophone (that solo though!).
The track is a mix of love and loss, the Chinese characters for flower (花) and flame (火) are used to represent this short-lived romance. If you pay attention, you will hear these things, Chinese flutes, erhu, and guzheng combined with electronic sounds that make it sound like a movie. The track has this futuristic and retro vibe at the same time, with elements of 90s Mandopop and Chinese cinema that make it sound timeless and memorable even after the song has ended.
I can’t get enough of how Yulan & Blaise keep on making such experimental music that is so personal and universal at the same time, and you should follow them on social media to stay tuned for whatever other mind-blowing songs they are going to release next as they work on their first EP that is expected to be released in 2025.
