Ryan Matthew – “Heavy Handed”

Ryan Matthew’s new single “Heavy Handed” is probably his boldest move so far, because it came out in early October, right in time for Halloween, and it leans into a darker, theatrical style that you don’t hear much in indie music. Ryan clearly had a full vision behind it, not just musically, but visually too.

The song came together in his home studio, and while that can sometimes mean a stripped-back sound, this one is full of texture. The fretless bass by Chris Lozano adds a weird, eerie feel that really works with the rest of the track. Ryan also brought in a drummer and tracked guitars and keys himself. It’s got some Jack White-style guitar moments and that 3/4 timing adds to the off-balance feel in a good way. What really makes this release stand out is how Ryan didn’t stop at just making a song. He directed the music video himself, which takes cues from Twin Peaks: The Return and horror shows like American Horror Story. You can tell he’s thinking bigger than a single.

If you’re into the theatrical, offbeat side of music, this is worth checking out. Follow him online to see what else he’s working on in 2025.
