Ruby – “Ruby”

Ruby’s self-titled EP is a tight five-track blast of throwback rock that doesn’t sound stuck in the past. The Chicago band clearly leans into their love of 80s rock, but they don’t just mimic it, they have their own spin, and it works. “Flashback” and “Stay” are just impressive and easy to follow, and “Chasing Shadows” brings a moody, synth-heavy vibe that adds a fresh texture to the lineup. “What’s Going On” lays down some groove with basslines that cut through the mix, while “26” has an energy that keeps it all grounded and familiar in the best way.

Rachel Caldwell’s vocals deserve a mention too, her delivery is confident, sharp, and fits perfectly with the band’s punchy, high-energy sound. There’s a real chemistry here, and it comes across loud and clear. It sounds like a band that actually enjoys playing together, something that’s not as common as you’d think.
