Jonni Slater – “Between the Shadows”

Jonni Slater’s new album Between the Shadows is worth spending time with, and it’s my favorite release of the day. He’s a Glasgow-based songwriter and this release shows how much thought and care has gone into each track. Some songs are really stripped back, just piano and voice, while others have more layers and depth. You can hear bits of rock, soul and electronic influences, but nothing feels out of place.

There’s a thread running through the album about memory and how we look at the past. Moments we wish we’d handled differently or things we never said. It’s not all heavy, though. There’s also a sense of noticing things beyond yourself, like other people’s lives and what’s happening in the natural world.

The singles that came out earlier this year, including Super, Outside and Walked Beside You, all sit well together. They each bring something different but still stay connected to the rest of the record. Things We Didn’t Say closes it out in a way that makes you want to go back and hear the whole thing again.

If you’re into music that gives you space to think and doesn’t rush anything, give this album a listen. You can find it on Bandcamp or at shows. Follow Jonni Slater on Instagram or YouTube to stay updated on what he’s releasing through the rest of 2025.
