Ivan Moult – “Stood Out In The Storm”

Ivan Moult’s Stood Out In The Storm is a really solid folk album from the Cardiff singer-songwriter. He recorded the whole thing at his home studio, handling all the writing, playing, recording, and mixing himself. You can hear that personal touch all over the record.

This is his follow-up to 2023’s Songs From Severn Grove, and it came out of a difficult time in his life, and tracks like “No More Lies” and “Losing It All To The Blues” show him working through some heavy experiences, but he manages to find hope in the mess without forcing it. The title track “Stood Out In The Storm” captures that balance perfectly. It’s honest about the struggle but not wallowing in it.

His style pulls from 60s and 70s folk-blues, artists like John Martyn and Ry Cooder, but he’s put his own spin on it. BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Radio Wales have been championing his work, with Huw Stephens giving him regular airplay. He’s becoming one of the more compelling songwriters in Wales right now.

The album’s out now, and he’s played a full-band launch show at Canton Liberal Club in Cardiff on November 28th, and the album is worth your time if you’re into honest, well-crafted songwriting, and follow Ivan on social media to stay in the loop on new music for the rest of 2025.
