Hitlist – “Human Ceral”

“Human Ceral” is a powerful and lovable EP that makes a strong first impression right away. Hitlist sounds like a band having a blast while still getting a few things off their chest. The songs are built on alternative rock and punk energy, but the mood is not one-note. There is anger here, and plenty of weirdness, but also humour, romance, and a real urge to move. To be honest, it’s hard to pick just one favorite track, but the ones that I enjoyed are “Marriage Is Hard” and “Girlfriends”.

I like how unpredictable it all is. One moment the band are barking out frustration, the next they are letting the groove take over. The EP has a lot to say about people, especially the ways they lie, let each other down, ignore each other, and still somehow remain impossible to live without. That mix of bite and affection gives the record a lot of personality. For a debut EP, it has confidence without sounding stiff. You can hear the punk side, the funkier touches, and the heavier edges, yet it all sits together because the band clearly enjoy the chaos. It is loud, cheeky, and easy to replay.

“Human Ceral” works because it sounds full of actual people, not careful branding. Go back and check out Hitlist’s previous releases too, especially “Girlfriends”, and make sure you follow Hitlist.
