Ellery Twining – “Oy!”

Ellery Twining’s single “Oy!” is one of those pieces that gets more interesting the more you sit with it and the story around it already pulled me in, especially the connection with filmmaker Ben Bostian and the shared SCAD link that gives the whole project a real sense of history. That part matters because it makes this release come across like something built out of an actual creative connection, not a random pairing.

The most interesting thing to me is the way “Oy!” was put together. Twining used an indeterminate music approach, building each part by improvising over the previous one, and that gives the song a very natural shape. You can tell there was room for instinct in the process, and I think that makes the final result more engaging. It has a calm confidence to it, and I liked that it lets the mood develop on its own.

The music video adds a lot too. Watching it made the whole piece click more for me because it gives the song a stronger sense of place and purpose. “Oy!” comes across as thoughtful, personal, and genuinely interesting. Follow Ellery Twining on social media this year to keep up with new releases.
