The Prophitt – “work & progress”

I spent my afternoon with the new album by The Prophitt, titled work & progress, and it is a fascinating listen. This project is an expansive, twenty-eight track collection that moves with a very specific, locked-in energy from start to finish. You can tell a lot of care went into compiling these pieces. It plays out like a raw, unfiltered look into a creative mind, shifting smoothly between brief ideas and fully realized instrumentals.

Tracks like stillness; It’s okay? and takezo and the dueling tree establish a really comforting, grounded mood early on. There is a dusty, analog quality to the sampling that pulls you right in. As the tracklist moves forward, things get wonderfully unpredictable, and the progression from where’s my arc into prophecy of dying stars hits perfectly, showing a great sense of pacing despite the massive track count. I also kept hitting repeat on J Dilla can save U 2 and lightworks!, which have these incredible, hypnotic loops that stay stuck in your head long after the music stops. The inclusion of raw cuts like the demo version of don’t get tired of me adds a nice, intimate layer to the whole experience.

Personally, this is some of the most engaging, sample-heavy music to come out in a long time. It rewards listeners who want to sit down and absorb an entire body of work in one sitting. I highly recommend checking out the previous releases from The Prophitt to see how this sound has developed. Make sure to follow The Prophitt to stay updated about new releases in the rest of this year.
