Rachel Swain – “Old Familiar Way”
Rachel Swain’s “Old Familiar Way” is the kind of country song that wins you over fast because it knows how to have a good time without pretending heartbreak is no big deal. It takes that old sad-bar-song setup and gives it a real kick, turning it into something loose, lively, and ready for a dance floor. That change in approach really works and you can hear the ache in it, but there is also a real spark pushing the song forward.
The mix of honky tonk energy, pedal steel, and that rough edge in Rachel’s voice gives the track a lot of personality. She sounds wounded, sure, but never weak. There is a bit of swagger in the way the whole thing moves, and that contrast gives the song its charm. It has grit, it has warmth, and it never sounds too neat or overworked. It comes off like a band locking into a groove and having a blast with it.
It also makes me even more curious about Neon Lullaby. If this song is any sign, the album is going to sit in that sweet spot between hard truth and a good night out. That is a space Rachel Swain seems very comfortable in.
I had a great time with this one, and I’d happily put it on again. Go check out her earlier releases too, especially “Shame” and “Houston”, follow Rachel Swain, and keep an eye on what she does next. Are you into country songs that let you dance and brood at the same time?
