Waves of the Echo – “Words”
Waves of the Echo have been away for ten years, and “Words” makes it feel like they never left. The Helsinki indie rock band has come back swinging with a track that picks up exactly where their 2015 debut, Fading Daylight, Bright Nights, left off, and honestly, that’s a good thing. If you loved that record, this one is going to hit a familiar nerve.
The song is high-energy from the jump. Echoing guitars layer over big, booming 80s-inspired keyboard tones that feel both nostalgic and completely alive. It’s the kind of track that demands you turn the volume up, not because it’s aggressive, but because every layer rewards a closer listen. The melodies are catchy in a way that sneaks up on you, the kind where you’re humming the chorus an hour later and can’t figure out when it got stuck in your head.
Production-wise, Valtteri Väänänen has done a fantastic job at Lammaskallion Audio. The mix is full without being overwhelming, and every instrument has room to breathe.
This is one of my favourite comeback tracks in recent memory. Go back and spend time with Fading Daylight, Bright Nights if you haven’t already, and make sure you follow Waves of the Echo wherever you stream music. Have you ever had a song put words to something you’ve felt but couldn’t quite explain yourself?
