800cc – “hands so cold”

There is a brilliant piece of music out right now that captures the strange reality of modern love. The song “hands so cold” by Detroit artist Kevin Kline, who records under the name 800cc, is a completely fascinating piece of art. He worked with UK producer Charlie Andrew at Iguana Studios in London to expertly craft this track, and the result is a beautifully layered sound that people are labeling futurepsych.

The track opens with a familiar nod, borrowing its first chord from a classic Beatles song, before sliding into its own distinct world of washed out guitars and a backwards drum sample. It explores the quiet, mundane moments between partners in a digital world, like staring at a blank screen and seeing your own reflection while avoiding a real conversation, and Kevin handles these ideas beautifully alongside drummer Maxwell Sullivan and singer AK Patterson. When AK Patterson joins in for a call and response on the second chorus, it adds a whole new layer to the narrative. The second half of the track is especially stunning, with stacked vocals and harmonies that give a nod to the ethereal style of Brian Wilson. They used creative studio techniques like reversed conga recordings and vocal harmonizer pedals to build an amazing vibrant texture.

I absolutely love this release. The wonderful way it blends classic sixties pop structures with modern textures is brilliant. It is entirely genuine and stays with you long after the final note fades away.
